The two junior football players – quarterback Ross Trail and running back Justin Crawford – whocommitted to the University of Louisville while Charlie Strong was still the coach are no longer pledged to the Cardinals under coach Bobby Petrino.
It’s not surprising that a coaching change could lead to a change, as both prospects and the teams re-evaluate what’s best for them. Both players remain interested in U of L.
Trail, of Olive Branch, Miss., withdrew his commitment on Tuesday night, his father, Rusty, said.
“Ross is still interested in Louisville, but he has a lot of other interests from other schools,” Rusty Trail said. “He just felt better about looking around without being committed to them.”
Trail, who has a Memphis offer, still plans to visit a U of L junior day in April. His dad said his son also plans to visit Mississippi State, Missouri, North Carolina and Strong’s new school, Texas (for the Longhorns’ spring game). Rusty Trail said former U of L offensive coordinator Shawn Watson (now at Texas), who was Ross’ primary recruiter, has remained in contact.
Crawford, a high three-star running back from Columbus, Ga., said he decommitted because he was unsure whether his scholarship offer to U of L would remain intact, “so I did what I though was best and just chose to wait my options out.”
Crawford said he has been in touch with U of L’s new coaches, who have told him “they would love for me to still become a Cardinal.” He said U of L is in his top three and remains a place “I would love to attend and perform at.”
Crawford said Georgia and Florida are his other two favorites. He said he has offers from U of L, UGA, Alabama, Tennessee, Boston College, Marshall and “a few more.”
Rivals.com writer Mike Singer first reported that Trail had reopened his recruitment.
